Challenge

In early 2022, UnitedMasters set out to build BREAD—an internal system designed to give finance and support teams greater control over artist royalty calculations and payments. This transition from third-party services would provide more flexibility, ensuring timely and secure payouts while also enabling a completely new artist-facing wallet experience across mobile and web.

As a Senior Product Designer, I joined during this pivotal moment, tasked with designing Artist Wallet—a feature that would:

• Enable artists to seamlessly access their streaming income

• Provide comprehensive streaming data

• Identify top-performing platforms

• Maintain access to their financial records

Process

Research & Defining the Problem

Existing Wallet Challenges: Limited to PayPal-only payouts, monthly payments, and no financial visibility for artists.

User Research: Conducted 8 artist interviews, analyzed Reddit, Twitter, and competitor platforms to identify pain points.

Key Insights: Artists wanted faster payouts, detailed earnings breakdowns, multiple cash-out options, and an all-in-one financial hub.

Design & Iteration

UX Strategy: Mapped customer journeys, prioritized artist needs, and designed for mobile-first.

Explorations: Developed concepts for Onboarding, Wallet Feed, Reporting, Cash-Out Flow, and Financial Education.

Component Library: Built new components to support data visualization and financial insights, expanding the design system for future scalability.

Enhancing Experience: Introduced micro-interactions, celebratory moments, real-time status updates, and haptic feedback.

Collaboration & Execution

Remote Collaboration: Used Loom for async feedback, held weekly UX/UI syncs, and partnered with engineers & analysts.

Technical Constraints: Integrated Trolley for banking, guiding artists through a seamless onboarding flow despite limited customization.

Design Handoff: Delivered detailed Figma files, interactive prototypes, and Loom walkthroughs, ensuring a smooth transition to development.

Honing in on Final Screens

After reviews with artists and the design and engineering teams, we honed in on our final screens for the app.

O‍utcomes

Increased Adoption:

Three months after the launch of the enhanced UnitedMasters Artist Wallet, adoption jumped by 25%. Artists valued the improved transparency and greater control over their earnings.

Empowered Artists:

Artists could now log into the platform and instantly access their streaming data, track income trends, and understand which platforms were performing the best. This information empowered them to make informed decisions about their promotional strategies.‍

‍Streamlined Finances:

The integrated financial records simplified the process of accessing payment history, contracts, and tax-related documents. Artists no longer had to sift through emails or external sources to gather financial information.‍

Instant Payouts:

The instant payout feature was particularly well-received. Artists could request payouts on-demand, ensuring they had timely access to their earnings to invest back into their music careers.
